Envelope Budgeting System.

On this page, you will:

  • what is an Envelope Budgeting System.
  • learn the benefits of using the Envelope Budgeting System.

The Envelope Budgeting System (EBS) has been proven to be able to help individuals and families to control spending. EBS suitable for people who:

  • have difficulties keeping track of their spending.
  • want to take control over their spending habits.

What is Envelope Budgeting System and how does it work?

The Envelope Budgeting System is a system that helps the user to keep track of and control spending. This is how it works.

  • Work out a monthly budget.
  • Then take out some envelopes. Label one envelope for each expense item in your budget.
  • At the beginning of the month when you receive your take-home pay, fill up the envelopes with money as set in your budget. For example, if you have budgeted to spend $300 on rental, $500 on food and $40 on entertainment, then put $300 into the “Rental” envelope, $500 into the “Food” envelope and $50 into the “Entertainment” envelope.
  • When you plan a night out for some fun then take out the money from the “Entertainment” envelope. If you want to buy food, then use the money in the “Food” envelope.

Benefits of Envelope Budgeting System.

  • Helps to come up with a realistic budget.
Example, if the “Food” envelope always gets empty before your next paycheck, then you know that you need to put more money to this expense item in your budget. Then you will need to look within your whole budget to see if you can cut expense on other items to put more money into “Food”. With this information, you can revise your budget and come up with a more realistic budget.

  • Helps to keep your spending in check.
When the “Entertainment” envelope gets empty, then you can stop yourself from spending on entertainment for the rest of the month until you refill this envelope with money from your next paycheck. If you didn’t separate your money this way, you might unknowingly use money meant for food to watch a movie.

  • No need to keep track of your spending.
With EBS, you don’t need to keep track of how much you have spent on different expenses. You will automatically know that you have spent the maximum amount you can spend if the envelope becomes empty.
