Setting Your Goals.
On this page, you will:
- learn how to set your own goals.
Develope goals in the 6 areas of your life.
Find a quiet place. Think through the 6 areas of your life and figure out what you want to achieve in those 6 areas. Write down your thoughts on paper.
- Family
- Health
- Spiritual
- Social
- Financial and Career
- Mental and Education
When you have finished, analyze the thoughts that you have written down. Identify which are your dreams (or values). List down all your dreams on a new piece of paper.
List them down in a worksheet like below.
| Dreams / Values | What can I do? (descriptive) | How much? (measureable) | Period (time) |
| Be debt free. | Pay off my credit card debt. | $15,000 | 15 months |
| Be debt free. | Pay off my personal loan. | $4,000 | 6 months |
Make sure the dreams (or values) are what you want.
Examine your list and ask yourself if the dreams are what you want. Don't put it there just because it sounds good. Owning a big house sounds good but if prefer living in a small and cozy house instead of a big empty house, then owning a big house is not what you want.
What can you do to achieve your dreams?
List down what you can do to achieve your dreams. These should be descriptive, measurable and time specific.
Write your goals in the positive tone. Your goals are like instructions to yourself. The more positive instructions you get, the more positive your attitude will be and therefore the more positive the outcome will be.
Your goals should be realistic yet challenging.
You plan your budget based on your goals. You need to believe in your budget (and goals) so you will have the faith in sticking to your budget. If your goals are not realistic, you will lose this faith. Therefore, it is important that your goals are realistic for your budget to work.
Your goals should also be challenging. This will motivate you to work harder, improve your skills and knowledge.
Keep your goals where you can see them.
The saying goes, “Out of sight, out of mind”. Keep your goals in a place (or places) where you can see them easily without searching for them. If you see them enough times, then the goals will be automatically etched in your mind.
When you remember your goals, then everytime before you make a decision, you will automatically ask yourself if the decision can take your closer to your goals.
