Make sure that your first counseling session is free. Do not bother with the organization if it insists on charging you for the first counseling session. While you may be charged a fee if you decide to use their debt consolidation service however, the counseling first session should be free.

From the first counseling session, the counselor will provide you with a few financial choices. From these choices you will be able to assess his or her abilities and whether you believe the plan put forward to you is suitable or workable for you. Choose a counselor that you trust and that you feel confident in his or her abilities and choose a plan that you believe you can live with for some years to come.
